What the phases mean. Civil twilight is when there's enough light to do most outdoor activities without artificial light. Nautical twilight is when the horizon is just barely visible at sea — historically when sailors could still take star sights.Astronomical twilight is when the sky is dark enough for serious astronomy.Golden hour is photographer-speak for the period when the sun is between about 6° below and 6° above the horizon — soft, warm, directional light. The calculations use the Meeus / NOAA solar position equations (same math behind astronomy software, accurate to within a minute or two anywhere on Earth).
All math runs in your browser. Location is only sent to your browser's geolocation API if you click "Use my location".

About Sun Position & Daylight

Sunrise, sunset, golden hour, blue hour, civil / nautical / astronomical twilight, day length — for any latitude, longitude and date. Live world map showing the sub-solar point (where the sun is directly overhead on Earth right now), the day/night terminator, and direction lines from your location to where the sun rises, sits, and sets. Polar sky-chart for the local horizon view too. Implements the NOAA / Meeus solar-position math directly in your browser, accurate to within a minute or two anywhere on Earth. Use-my-location quick-button, eight city presets, click anywhere on the map to switch location.
