What is Error Level Analysis? ELA recompresses the image at a known JPEG quality and highlights the regions that shift the most. JPEG re-saves degrade an image a measurable amount per pass. Regions edited in a way that gives them a different compression history — paste from another JPEG, layered export, smooth fill where something was removed, text overlay added — usually shift differently from the surrounding pixels, so they appear as bright patches on the ELA heatmap. About Error Level Analysis

Quick image tampering check via Error Level Analysis. Drop a JPEG and we recompress it at a known quality, then highlight per-pixel differences amplified for visibility. Regions edited in a way that gives them a different compression history — pasted patches, smooth fill where something was removed, text overlays — usually show up as bright spots on the heatmap.
