Anchors the gestational-week calculation. Estimate if exact date is fuzzy — your OB/midwife has the official date.
About the ranges. Recommended-gain bands come from the Institute of Medicine's 2009 guidance for SINGLETON pregnancies, keyed off pre-pregnancy BMI. First-trimester gain is small (~1–4 lbs) regardless of category; the steady weekly slope kicks in around week 14. Ranges are guidance for healthy populations — your OB or midwife may set different targets based on your history. Carrying twins? IOM 2009 has a separate table — talk to your provider, this tool isn't sized for multiples.
