The categories. Per ACC/AHA 2017: Normal < 120/80, Elevated 120–129/<80, Stage 1 130–139 OR 80–89, Stage 2 ≥ 140 OR ≥ 90, Crisis > 180 AND/OR > 120. Older guidelines used 140/90 as the Stage-1 threshold — those have been superseded. A single reading isn't a diagnosis; doctors look at consistent patterns of elevated readings over time, ideally taken at similar times of day. White-coat hypertension is real; home readings are often more representative than office ones.
