How to use this. For portraits, you want a shallow DOF — long focal length (85mm+), wide aperture (f/1.8-2.8), close subject — which throws the background into pleasant blur. For landscapes, focus at the hyperfocal distance and stop down to f/8-11; everything from half that distance to infinity will be sharp. For macro work the DOF is millimetres wide even at f/16, which is why stacking is a thing. The Circle of Confusion is the diameter at which a point becomes visibly blurry on a standard ~8×10″ print viewed at arm's length — smaller-sensor cameras have less DOF latitude at the same equivalent framing, which is why phone cameras simulate it with software portrait modes.

About Depth of Field Calculator

Calculate near focus, far focus, total depth of field and hyperfocal distance for any sensor + focal length + aperture + subject distance. Seven sensor presets (full frame, APS-C, MFT, 1-inch, medium format, phone), every standard f-stop, metric or imperial. Standard CoC = sensor diagonal / 1500. For shallow-DOF portrait work, deep-DOF landscapes, or planning a macro stack.
